Are finals really three weeks away?!?!

Before life gets really "holiday crazy", it might be worth your time to think about all the information you have stored on your tablet.  Every class in the school has used the tablets - for many different purposes.

You may have information stored in many different places:

- have you used the same "note taking app" all year?
- has information been stored in different blogging apps?
- have you used different word processors?
- is your information stored on the hard drive?
- a SIM card?
- Dropbox?
- Google Drive?
- Did your teachers put study guides on Edline?
- If yes, did you download them to make viewing easier?

You may want to give some thought to making sure you know where all your information is, so you are not spinning your wheels looking for data when it is time to prepare for exams.

Good luck with all the effort it will take to wrap up 1st Semester!

Instagram and KIK

What is Kik? And is Kik okay for Kids?

Kik Messenger iconSounds like a commercial for a sugary cereal – Kik for Kids!  But are all the kids using Kik really kids?
I’d been hearing about Kik Messenger, a free texting app available for iPhones, Android, Windows, and Blackberry phones.  Remember, you don’t need a phone to use iPhone apps; if your child has an iPod touch or an iPad, they can install iPhone apps.  Kik is just one of many free texting apps available in the App store.
I was curious about Kik so I went to the App store to download it.  I read the description and noticed there were over 40,000 reviews for the app.  That’s a lot and I was curious to see what people had to say.  It didn’t take me long to see what the problem is with Kik.
While I’m sure that many people use Kik to simply send messages to friends there are many other free texting apps available, including iMessage which is already included for iPod touch, I don’t see a need for Kik on a child’s mobile device.

Kik and Instagram

On Kik, you need to know someone’s username to start an online chat.  Some Kik users use Instagram to publicize their Kik username in their profiles or by tagging their photos.  You’ll see some users with “Kik me” and then their Kik username in their profile.  If your child or teen’s Instagram profile is public, and they use it to publicize their Kik username, then anyone who sees that on Instagram might “hit them up” on Kik.  So keep this in mind if you allow your child or teen to use Instagram.
So parents, check your child’s phone or iPod touch.  If you see the Kik messenger icon, open the app and take a look at the messages.   If you don’t like what you see, discuss with your child.  Maybe he or she isn’t really aware of the potential dangers and consequences.
A recent review on the iTunes page sums it up: “This app is quick easy and fun, but too many pedophiles asking me for nude pictures which almost forced me to delete this app. But it is safe as long as you don’t talk to strangers.”

If you are having problems charging your tablet make sure you bring ALL THE PARTS of the charger to the TAB LAB with you when you stop in.  Mr. Vela can not help you if he can not trouble shoot all parts of your  tablet - which includes your specific charger.

Keyboard typing delayed

If you experience delayed typing on your tablet, this could be due to the connection with the software or website you are using.  Take a minute to save the file to a new filename, then open that file and try again.  Working from the new file usually corrects the delay.

Folio breaking?

If you notice your keyboard folio showing signs of wear and tear, please bring it to Mr. Vela in the TAB LAB before the damage gets so bad it can not be repaired.  Mr. Vela can fix this and make it more durable if you bring it in before it completely tears.

Screen randomly turns on

Some students are saying that their screen randomly stays on. ..

Here is some information that is included in the box from Lenovo:

To save battery power and prevent accidental data entry, perform one of the following operations before you close the lid of the ThinkPad Tablet Keyboard Folio Case:
- Turn off the ThinkPad Tablet
- Turn off the screen and wait five to ten seconds.

Once the power button is pressed and the screen goes dark, the "touch screen" feature on the tablets remains active for 5 seconds.  This is actually to ensure that you didn't press the power button by accident.  So if you close the case too quickly, the screen will sense something touched it and turn back on, depleting your battery life.

Please slow down before closing your keyboard folio case to ensure it does not turn back on in your backpack.
